Ellesmere Port practice extension is just what the doctors ordered
New waiting area at Westminster Surgery
A construction project to double the size of Westminster Surgery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire is now complete.
The £350k programme, commissioned and managed by NHS Property Services, extended and transformed the surgery by utilising space from two adjacent and vacant retail units.
Tasmin Purssell, Assistant Project Manager at NHS Property Services, said: “The surgery was desperate for extra space and we were delighted to support our tenants and help improve their estate and provide the extra space and facilities their patients and staff needed. Thanks to our partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council and Peel Holdings, we were able to extend into empty retail units that they previously leased from NHS Property Services, increasing the size of the building and helping to transform the space.
“All work was carried out in isolated phases to ensure services were not disrupted, enabling the surgery to remain operational throughout. This of course presented a number of challenges along the way but thanks to the surgery staff, patients and our partners, we were able to complete the scheme in March 2016 and provide much needed space and an improved environment for the surgery and the local community.”
The redesign and refurbishment project for the Church Parade based facility has created more clinical rooms and provided a larger waiting area following the rationalisation of administrative facilities. The single-storey project was designed by Chester-based architectural and planning consultancy, Cassidy + Ashton.
Dave Owen, chartered building surveyor and director at Cassidy + Ashton, said: “It’s always tricky to undertake projects in a live environment, which is why we called upon the extensive experience of our planning, building surveying and architectural teams to devise a scheme that worked for the contractor, staff and patients.
“The new facility is really impressive and has provided much needed space for the growing surgery.”
Westminster Surgery has two GPs, supported by nurses and administrative staff and also provides a number of services managed by Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
