Junior Minister for Health, Dr Dan Poulter, paid a special visit recently to the Halcyon midwife-led birth centre in Smethwick.

Staff and patients at the centre, which is leased by NHS Property Services and operated by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, had the chance to meet Dr Poulter MP as he toured the unit.

Officially opened in 2011, the centre provides patients with a full range of birthing facilities led by experienced midwives.

During his visit Dr Poulter MP also met with representatives of three of the organisations that have helped to ensure the new centre is a success – Consultant Midwife Kathryn Gutteridge, Guy Carson the project manager of the build and the developer Edward Sutton, Managing Director, LSP Developments.

Guy Carson, Project Programme Manager at NHS Property Services, said: “It was great to help host such a high profile visit to this fantastic centre. Dr Poulter was very impressed with what has been created and the facilities and services the centre offers to local mums-to-be and their families. I am very proud to have been part of such a successful project.”
