Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at NHS Open Space? Meet Billie, who plays a key role in our Utilisation Sensor Programme (USP).
Hi Billie! Can you tell us about your role?
I'm currently managing the USP, which I’m really enjoying.
The USP is an initiative to support data-driven estate planning across the NHS and our continued support for the NHS 10 Year Health Plan. As part of the project, NHS Property Services is installing room utilisation sensors in 315 of our properties. The data gathered will help understand how clinical and non-clinical spaces are being used, enabling better-informed decisions that support improved healthcare delivery.
What experience do you bring to the team?
I bring 15 years of experience in the property industry, eight of those at NHS Property Services, which means I’ve dealt with almost everything imaginable. Over the years, I’ve built up a solid bank of knowledge and developed strong communication skills that help me get on with just about anyone.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
Well, it usually starts with a strong cup of coffee and a quick scan of my inbox to see what the day has in store. From there, it’s a mix of project planning, chasing updates, answering questions, and making sure the USP keeps ticking along nicely. I’m often juggling site visit logistics, liaising with teams across the region, and trying to stay one step ahead of whatever pops up next. No two days are the same — and that’s exactly how I like it!
Can you tell us about a challenge you’ve overcome in your role?
One challenge I’ve faced in my role was coordinating multiple site visits across different locations with limited notice and incomplete information. It required careful planning, clear communication, and a fair bit of persistence to bring everything together. By working closely with internal teams and external contacts, I was able to resolve the gaps and ensure everything ran smoothly. It was a good reminder of the importance of adaptability and building strong working relationships.
What are your biggest achievements in your role to date?
One of my biggest achievements has been playing a key role in the delivery of the USP, which has involved coordinating across multiple teams, managing tight timelines, and ensuring clear and consistent communication with both internal and external stakeholders. It’s been rewarding to see the project progress and know I’ve played a key role in its delivery.
What keeps your role interesting?
Each site, stakeholder, and situation brings its own set of needs and challenges, which means I’m constantly adapting. I really enjoy the mix of working with different people, both internally and externally, and seeing how each interaction helps move the project forward. Plus, the use of new technologies and systems keeps things fresh and gives me the chance to keep learning.
Tell us a bit about you!
Outside of work, I love spending my time with my little one. This keeps me busy, entertained, and occasionally covered in snacks! I’ve always loved travelling, and now I’m embracing the adventure of travelling with a baby in tow. It’s a whole new experience, but one I’m really enjoying.
What’s next for you and NHS Open Space?
For me personally, I’m focused on continuing to grow within my role — building on the experience I’ve gained through the USP and developing my skills in stakeholder engagement and project delivery. I’m keen to keep learning and support a more efficient way of working.
As for NHS Open Space, there are always exciting opportunities ahead. With growing demand and evolving customer needs, there’s real potential to expand our reach, improve user experience, and continue refining how we communicate and deliver services. I’m looking forward to being part of that journey and contributing to its continued success.
