Operational leadership

I was pleased to welcome 35 colleagues to the two-day Operational Leadership Event in Redditch last week to celebrate achievements and define and discuss objectives for the coming year.

The event was an opportunity for senior managers from the newly structured operations directorate to come together and discuss the future. Colleagues from facilities management, safety, construction, communications and training each presented on their own areas of work and it was great to see enthusiasm, motivation and team work as we worked through a variety of matters. Colleagues were also taking the initiative to understand how each area of the directorate worked and how they impact and interact with each other to enable us all to achieve our end goals.

I’m extremely proud of what the team has achieved to date and the plans we have in place to build on our successes and take the business forward. Some of our achievements which were highlighted at the event, include:

  • Through FM Rationalisation we’ve successfully reduced 2500 FM contracts down to 249 and 1000s of suppliers to under 20
  • 900 previously outsourced staff have been brought directly under the employment of NHSPS
  • Setting a new standard for FM operations with national media recognition
  • 1062 construction projects delivered, with a total year spend of £50.3m
  • Over 500 clinical rooms upgraded to meet latest guidance, all in a live environment
  • Over 3000 Fire Risk Assessments undertaken

The event saw the team working through a number of topics, including; customer engagement and commercial management and on the second day I was delighted to welcome Stephanie Davies, one of the most respected and in-demand speakers in the professional and personal development sector. Stephanie delivered a very engaging and dynamic session, providing a unique insight into presentation craft, communication and engagement, empowering the team to develop new ways of working and new ways of understanding and observing  a variety of different situations and scenarios.

The event was a great success and I’d like to thank everyone who attended. We have an excellent team, with outstanding leadership skills and I’m extremely proud of what we have done and where we are going. Leadership in any business should occur in all directions: downward to staff, sideways to colleagues and upward to senior management and I’m privileged to lead an operational management team that exemplifies this. I’d like to thank the whole team for their continued commitment and passion.

As always, I’m keen to hear your views on any aspect of the work we do at NHS Property Services. Please contact me and I will respond to you directly.
