Meet the NHS Open Space team

Meet Derek Samuel, our Commercial Manager for NHS Open Space as he speaks on his role within the team and how the programme is helping the NHS.

What is your role in the NHS Open Space team?

I am the Commercial Manager in Business Development for NHS Open Space – responsible for promoting and raising the profile of the programme to new customers, with the aim of driving up registrations, bookings, and utilisation of the NHSPS estate. The second part of my role involves supporting the onboarding of existing property users, working with the wider team to manage the transition of these users to the booking platform.

What does an average day for you look like?

My first six months have been incredibly varied – I like variation! I have initiated various business development activities, which have included researching prospective customers across the NHS, Independent Healthcare, Local/Central Government, and the Third Sector, to enable us to run targeted, digital marketing campaigns to attract new customers. Other responsibilities include exploring commercial partnerships, dealing with enquiries from potential customers and arranging viewings for interested organisations who need to see space before booking. I have also been given the opportunity to inspect properties across Cheshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, and Greater Manchester – an excellent way to familiarise myself with what OS has to offer!

What experience do you bring to the team?

A wide range of experience – health sector knowledge, commercial experience, and an understanding of the key drivers to the users of Open Space. I have worked in various parts of the healthcare system in the UK, having undertaken roles in NHS commissioning, business development roles for three national healthcare providers, and programme management roles within a front-running Integrated Care System (ICS) in Greater Manchester.

How do you think NHS Open Space is helping the NHS?

NHS Open Space is going to play an instrumental role as health services are gradually reinstated in the coming months, and with the emergence of Integrated Care Systems we are going to see an increased need for flexible accommodation solutions in multiple localities. Additionally, there are several primary and community-based providers who will be looking for space to expand, as the NHS deals with the backlog in its clinical caseload and the need to comply with new COVID-19 secure guidelines.

How would you describe your NHS Open Space colleagues in three words? Friendly, supportive, and hard-working!
