Tessa Jowell Health Centre now open

The new Tessa Jowell Health Centre in East Dulwich opened to appointment only patients in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening is the culmination of many years of work to create innovative new services in a modern building to serve the people of Southwark. The development of the site has been a collaborative effort between Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group, CHP, LIFTCO, NHS Property Services and health service providers.  The partners worked closely together to programme, plan and fund the new build. NHSPS (as land owner) groundleased part of the Dulwich Community Hospital site to CHP, phasing sales of the remainder to raise NHS funds and enable a school build alongside.

The opening is the culmination of many years of work to create innovative new services in a modern building to serve the people of Southwark. Previously known as the Dulwich Healthcare Centre, there was a public competition to name the centre in 2019, resulting in the choice of the Tessa Jowell Health Centre. The name reflects the contribution of the late Dame Tessa Jowell to healthcare in her constituency and more widely across London.

The building has been completed with input from future staff and patient representatives into services provided, navigation of the centre and the design. The new health centre will host services provided until now at the Dulwich Community Hospital, other local hospitals and several primary care buildings. The design of the health centre, with multiple services available, places patients at the centre of the care they receive with support services able to work together in one building. It also allows people to not have to travel to hospital for treatment in many cases.

Services will be provided by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Omnes Healthcare. Other specialist, voluntary and community organisations will also be providing services.

You can see a video of the new centre and a list of services on the NHS South East London Clinical Commissioning Group (SELCCG) website.
