NHS Open Space wins at Public Sector Transformation Awards

The digital platform developed by NHS Property Services has been recognised at the Public Sector Transformation Awards for delivering elevated performance, creating efficiencies, and delivering outstanding service with improved value to patients and service providers.

Yesterday we were delighted to accept the award for ‘Efficiency and Effectiveness’ at the Public Sector Transformation Awards. It is the result of incredibly hard work from the team over the past four years, from first launching the pilot in 2017, to now operating in 190 sites and expanding rapidly across the NHS Property Services portfolio.

In this time, we have grown the NHS Open Space community, welcoming over 3,815 users, and reached over 179,902 bookings, accounting for over 1,160,233 hours of vital service delivery to patients and communities. We have welcomed a wider range of services from their local NHS hubs, from mental health to diabetes treatment. NHS Open Space programme has made the step forward in the optimisation of the NHS estate, making much more efficient use of the estate and minimising vacant or underused space.

As the NHS continues to change and evolve in how it delivers services, so must the NHS estate and those running it. NHS Open Space embraces the use of innovative technology and best-practice onsite management to provide a greater choice of flexible accommodation in the heart of our local communities, reducing the pressure on large hospitals and making life easier for patients.

The potential for NHS Open Space to transform the NHS estate has become ever more apparent during COVID-19, as services seek flexibility and visibility over how space is used. The booking platform means that our customers only pay for the time and space they need, which could provide much-needed relief on finances for independent and small businesses in the midst of the pandemic. 

Looking ahead to 2022, we’re now preparing to onboard our next batch of properties and start a steady stream of onboarding throughout the year, spanning the NHSPS portfolio. 

It's fantastic to see NHS Open Space get industry recognition and we’re excited to see how the programme grows and evolves. As NHS Property Services strives to help the NHS get the best of its estate to enable excellent patient care, I think it will prove to be a cornerstone of our future business as we adapt to and drive changes in the NHS estate.
