New Director of Responsible Business Appointed

NHS Property Services has this week announced the appointment of leading ethical and sustainable construction expert Dr Shamir Ghumra, who will join its Executive Board later this month as Director of Responsible Business.

Martin Steele, Chief Executive Officer for NHSPS said: “The Executive Board are delighted to welcome Shamir to the organisation, and we look forward to working closely with him as we embark on the next step on our journey to demonstrating we are a truly responsible business.

“Shamir is extremely well-regarded both nationally and internationally for his work, and I am certain that his knowledge and experience will benefit NHSPS greatly, enabling us to drive this tremendously important new function forward.”

Dr Ghumra joins NHSPS from BRE (Building Research Establishment) where he holds the role of Head of Building Performance Services. He is a leading expert on sustainability challenges in the built environment, and a board member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)t. He has an Engineering Doctorate from Loughborough University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and a Chartered Environmentalist. Shamir is also Visiting Professor of ESG Performance and Strategy at Loughborough University.

Well connected to both industry and academia he was responsible for a range of business areas at BRE including energy modelling, BREEAM and the BRE Academy. Shamir is a former board member and co-founder of the Supply Chain Sustainability School and former chair of the Construction industry coalition on Modern Slavery. He plays an active role in standards and is involved with both European and International work.

Shamir said: “I am very excited to be joining NHS Property Services at a time when the organisation is starting to realise its potential as a responsible business. This is a turning point for so many businesses in the construction and facilities management industries, and I hope that by bringing my experience to NHSPS we can deliver a sustainable NHS estate that is future proofed for generations of patients.”
