Overview

Southend-on-Sea wards such as Shoeburyness face notable health inequalities, influenced by various factors such as access to healthcare, and lifestyle choices.

Mid and South Essex ICB initiated a scheme and secured capital to provide a new primary care space for Southend Primary Care Network in Norton Place. Previously a small residential care home facility in Shoeburyness, it was vacated and temporarily used for Covid vaccinations during the pandemic.

We supported the ICB’s ambition, successfully applying for a change of use and refurbishing the 305m2 of vacant space within the old residential care facility. Norton Place opened in Autumn 2023.

Impact

  • Increased primary care capacity: Providing additional accommodation for approximately 37,000 local people in a deprived area, addressing urgent healthcare needs.

  • Care closer to home: Enabling local care to be delivered closer to home, improving access and convenience for patients.
  • Immediate relief: Addresses the immediate demand for primary care services and reduces the strain on existing facilities in the area.
