A new purpose-built health centre has opened in Sleaford Street, providing modern NHS estate for GP and community healthcare services for people living in Nine Elms, Battersea and the surrounding area.
NHS Property Services worked with NHS South West London, Wandsworth Council, Battersea Power Station, Peabody and Battersea Fields Practice to deliver the health centre. It opened on 11 May 2026 as part of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Health Programme, increasing local NHS capacity as the population grows and providing an estate platform from which services can develop over time.
The new building gives Battersea Fields Practice’s services a modern home, replacing its smaller branch surgery at Thessaly Road. The additional space enables the practice to serve existing patients more effectively, accommodate the growing local population and provide a stronger base for a wider range of NHS services.

“Through collaboration with our partners, we have created a space that supports joined-up care and helps services respond to the needs of the evolving community in this important development within the Battersea area.”
The development is a long-term property response to the Nine Elms Vauxhall Opportunity Area regeneration programme, which includes at least 18,500 new homes, with population growth expected to continue until 2041. By putting suitable healthcare infrastructure in place alongside new housing, Sleaford Street Health Centre helps ensure the NHS estate can support both established and new communities.
Dr Sara Morgenstern, Lead GP at Battersea Fields Practice, said: “We’re really pleased to be welcoming patients to our new Sleaford Street site. It is a significant improvement on our previous premises, providing a more spacious and comfortable environment for patients and staff.
“Most importantly, it gives us greater flexibility to expand the services we offer and work alongside other local health and care organisations, helping more patients access the care they need closer to home.”
The centre provides modern facilities for an extended range of primary care services, including face-to-face and virtual appointments, while enabling community health providers to deliver services locally. This is a core component of the UK Government’s 10 Year Health Plan for England and it exemplifies the plan’s shift from hospital to community care by giving patients greater access to care closer to home.
The Sleaford Street Health Centre reflects the principles behind NHS Property Services’ neighbourhood health centre approach: creating flexible, purpose-built buildings where primary care and community services can work together around local needs. NHSPS is supporting health systems to assess, plan, deliver and maintain neighbourhood health centres, making better use of the NHS estate to improve access, patient experience and value for money.
