Delivering a greener NHS
Climate change and the way we interact with our environment has a significant impact on our health. The UK government has therefore set a target for the country to become net zero carbon by 2050, with the NHS striving to be the first national health service to be net zero carbon by 2040.
With over 3000 properties in our portfolio - that's 10% of the NHS estate - NHS Property Services is in a prime position to lead the way in reaching net zero carbon by 2040. We will support NHS England and the UK government in fulfilling that ambition through the measures set out in our newly released Green Plan.
Our colleagues, customers and partners play a crucial role in implementing these measures and driving real change. We look forward to working together over the next three years, and beyond, to deliver a Greener NHS.
Getting NHS property to net zero
To fulfil the promise of a net-zero future, we must share continuous updates and best practices.
With ICSs (Integrated Care Systems) being a key part of this future, we created this monthly handout to share what our Energy and Environment team has been working on - showcasing what we achieved last month and our priorities for next month.
The content is relevant for anyone who wants to learn more about how we are reducing the environmental impact of our buildings.
Waste management resources
We've put together some guidance to help you separate waste at your site appropriately.
The guidance will help you understand what type of non-clinical waste should go into the different recycling bins and what type of clinical waste should go into the different colours of containers and bags.
How can you help?
To meet the UK Government’s net zero carbon goals, we need to work jointly with our customers to reduce energy consumption in each building.
You can help reduce your impact by:
- Turning off lights and equipment when not in use and at the end of the day
- Closing windows when heating or cooling a room
- Closing window coverings at night to keep room temperature stable
- Ensuring that you don't have heating and cooling simultaneously and that they are set to comfortable levels
- Implementing a building/area shut down procedure so everything is turned off at the end of the day
- Report any issues surrounding broken heating and cooling equipment and dripping taps to our FM Helpdesk

100% renewable electricity
By moving to 100% renewable electricity, NHSPS is offsetting over 37,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The use of renewable electricity hasn't increased costs to either NHSPS tenants or NHSPS itself and we are able to deliver some of the best prices in the market, while managing risk and maintaining budget certainty.
The move is in support of NHSE's Greener NHS campaign and forms part of NHSPS helping to transform the NHS estate so that it can provide sustainably run buildings that help to deliver excellent patient care.
100% Renewable Electricity Certificate
Download and display the Renewable Electricity Certificate from British Gas. This certifies that the electricity we are supplied with is backed by renewable generation Guarantee of Origin certificates.
Get a copy of your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
An EPC gives a property an energy efficiency rating from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient) on how it should be performing and is valid for 10 years. A copy of the EPC for your building can be made available upon request.
