NHS Property Services is pioneering an exciting new service to allow customers to use space in a much more cost-effective way.

NHS Open Space allows customers to hire both clinical and non-clinical space as and when they need it, on an hourly or daily basis. This provides greater flexibility and choice, while making much more efficient use of the estate and minimising vacant or underused space.

For our customers, this gives affordable, accessible and flexible space.

Since the launch of our pilot programme in 2017, we have:

  • Built a community of over 1,000 unique users and 350 NHS bodies and companies
  • Received over 65,000 bookings on our platform, accounting for 350,000 hours of vital service
  • Achieved an increase in room utilisation and a reduction of non-booked space being used at our pilot sites

This programme is a significant step forward in the optimisation of the NHS estate. Currently, sessional space is inconsistently administered across the NHS estate using different processes for booking, pricing, access conditions and service levels. This makes it difficult for customers to book and plan their space requirements, leading to wasted time and money.

The new online booking system allows customers to view detailed information about rooms, check availability then book, pay and manage the booking. Room types available vary from clinical space and activity rooms to meeting rooms and offices.
