Helping customers improve their office space

Helping customers improve their office space – and save millions of pounds

From hybrid meetings to remote working, the rise of new technology at work means office spaces are increasingly underused. And for our customers, it often means they’re spending money on empty offices. Money that could fund frontline care. Our office specialists within the Estate Strategy team work with customers to deliver fit-for-purpose workplaces and unlock cost savings. Over the past two years, they’ve completed 58 office projects and transactions. It’s reduced our office estate by 34,000 square metres. And delivered £66 million in savings to the NHS. We caught up with Victoria Taylor, Senior Strategy Manager on how we’re helping customers review their office space and drive value for NHS.

Tell us about the work you do?

Office space is often a large expense for our customers. We help them review whether the space they occupy still meets their needs. Our goal is to help customers create workplaces that are fit for modern, smarter working.

How do you do it?

We help customers get value for money on every square foot. We do that by assessing their needs which is often driven by a Lease event ie. an expiry or break option.

Is their office space sufficient to meet modern working practices? Is it under used or is more capacity needed? We consider whether there are opportunities to consolidate within the Health or wider public estate.

What's the aim?

People aren’t using offices in the same way, so there’s a real opportunity to make sure our customers get value for money. We’re optimising the office estate to improve workplaces across the NHS estate.

We've released a case study on how we've helped customers which you can view here.

What kind of customers do you work with?

They come in all shapes and sizes. From NHS England and CSUs, to Trusts and ICBs. We manage a lot of different stakeholders.

How does it feel to help customers make the most of their office estate?

When you help customers save money, it fills you with pride. The money goes back into frontline care.

It can pay for a hip replacement or fund more doctors and nurses. That’s why I’m here. I think that’s why we’re all here.  It feels amazing to help customers put money back into the NHS through clever use of office space.
