Bigger, better, brighter health centre opens in Tower Hamlets

A new health centre has opened in Tower Hamlets, with the potential to provide services for more than 18,000 local residents. Wellington Way Health Centre opened at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, providing a new home to Merchant Street and Stroudley Walk GP practices.

The practice teams have continued to provide services throughout the pandemic, with the majority of appointments being carried out by phone and online and patients being seen in person only when necessary.

Sangeeta Rana-Masson, who works as a GP at the practice, said: “The existing building has been extended, remodelled and refurbished to create a far bigger, modern health centre with services fit for the twenty-first century. This continues to be a challenging time for all of us, but this new GP practice helps lay the foundations for a bright future for our community.

“This is a great new facility and I, along with all the staff at the new health centre, am really pleased we were able to provide much-needed services for the period we have all been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The new facility has eight consulting rooms, six treatment rooms, two blood-testing rooms, a reception and seating area on the ground floor. There are two large rooms on the first floor, which will be used for sessions such as baby clinics and group therapy, as well as a room for more specialised care.

The health centre is equipped with the latest technology, including self-service arrival screens and surgery pod, which enable patients to monitor their weight, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure.

Angela Beart, Senior Construction Manager for NHS Property Services, said: “I am delighted that we have re-purposed a 1920s building to become a modern health centre. We have retained the historic appearance to the front and combined it with a modern extension to the rear in keeping to its surroundings.  The full internal refurbishment has brought the health centre to the 21st century and provides a clean and professional environment for both patients and staff.”
