Healthy Places: delivering transformational projects for the NHS estate

NHS Property Services (NHSPS) Healthy Places programme now extends to over 500 projects which are transforming the NHS estate nationwide, supporting Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), and enabling excellent patient care.

Healthy Places focuses on the successful delivery of projects that enable improved health and social care, helping the NHS get the most from its estate and drive better outcomes for patients and clinicians. Projects range from refurbishments and new builds, to accommodating social prescribing initiatives, to estate optimisation and repurposing of vacant space.

All the projects support local NHS estate plans through collaboration with commissioners and wider Integrated Care System (ICS) partners. This allows rapid delivery of projects by aligning local and national property capacity and capability, knowledge sharing of best practice and continuous learning.

Transformation at scale: looking back at FY 2021/22

Now at the end of financial year 2021/2, we are thrilled to have made such fantastic progress with our NHS colleagues across our 300 projects. 122 projects have been physically completed on site, and significant milestones have been met on others, such as the submission of a business case, which will support full completion in future years.

This year’s projects build on our initial pilot of 100 projects in 2020/21, and with new sites now identified for the third year of the programme, it now extends to over 500 projects nationally. The combined programme’s benefits are now being felt across the country amongst colleagues, customers, and patients alike.

Read our year end review

“At a time when the NHS is facing challenges never seen before, these projects are integral in helping to support the health service move forwards. By using the estate more efficiently, over the coming years we can provide better quality spaces for the provision of healthcare, which will improve patients’ experience, as well as create better environments for healthcare professionals to deliver care."

Martin Steele – Chief Executive Officer

Looking ahead: this year's Healthy Places projects

The third year of our Healthy Places programme will see an even greater emphasis on tackling health inequalities (supporting the levelling up agenda) and responding to NHS priorities such as community diagnostic centres and Covid-19 recovery support.

We will also be growing social prescribing spaces, introducing new NHS Open Space locations for flexible booking and improving NHS staff welfare areas.

We are keen to work more closely with Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) to identify and support regional priorities and emerging ICS estate strategies – both those we are already working on and emerging requirements.
